The rise of existentialism in continental europe
Intentionality manifests itself in another important way.

The first half of the book contains an extended rebuttal of what Camus took to be existentialist philosophy in the works of Kierkegaard, Shestov, Heidegger, and Jaspers.
But what does it that mean? In doing so I lose my individuality since the law holds for all but my actions become meaningful in the sense of understandable, governed by a norm.

It can insist on the transcendence of Being with respect to existence, and, by holding that transcendence to be the origin or foundation of existence, it can thus assume a theistic form. Philosophy As a whole, existentialism has had relatively little direct influence within philosophy. I must either reject their claims or avow them. The point is not always to speculate, but also ultimately to think about applying our knowledge. Within my experience, her lovableness is not an aspect of my image of her, rather it is a feature of her and ultimately a part of the world towards which my consciousness directs itself. Camus goes on to examine historical manifestations of rebellion, the most prominent case being that of the French Revolution. Simultaneously, though, he is a finite being since he is restricted by his body, particular socioeconomic conditions and so forth. Is not such a subjectivist model of truth and religion plainly dangerous? Fundamentally, existentialism argues all individuals are free and therefore responsible for their actions. Such an entity's existing cannot, therefore, be thought as the instantiation of an essence, and consequently what it means to be such an entity cannot be determined by appeal to pre-given frameworks or systems—whether scientific, historical, or philosophical. In the myth, Sisyphus is condemned for eternity to roll a rock up a hill, but when he reaches the summit, the rock will roll to the bottom again. We are all his murderers. Philosophical speculation is the result of a certain way of life and the attempted justification of this life.
Why ought I help the homeless, answer honestly, sit reverently, or get up? It is filled with beings which ontologically structure the very possibility of Dasein.

The linguistic differences, however, are not decisive for a determination of philosophical affinities. Certainly, if authenticity involves 'being on one's own', then there would seem to be some kind of value in celebrating and sustaining one's difference and independence from others.
Challenging our presumption of knowledge for how can we presume to know that which exceeds all possible knowing?

As Roquentin sits in a park, the root of a tree loses its character of familiarity until he is overcome by nausea at its utterly alien character, its being en soi.

However, again, I am first and foremost not my situation. This is why human beings locate a place which nevertheless remains unstable and unfixed. These opening chapters offer a nuanced and meticulously researched portrait of the pre-and-post-war intellectual community in France and thus prepare the reader for the chapters to come. While such an experience is no more genuine than my practical, engaged experience of a world of meaning, it is no less genuine either. On the one hand, if he is weakly constituted he may fall victim to despair in the face of nihilism, the recognition that life has no instrinsic meaning. Human beings can be considered in this way as well. What if someone was to support his acts of violence as a command of God? An authentic existence, for Sartre, therefore means two things. In order for it to influence his behavior he has to avow it afresh, but this is just what he cannot do; indeed, just this is what he hoped the original resolve would spare him from having to do. The debate rests of course upon the fundamental misconception that wants a body of work to exist and develop independently of or uninfluenced by its intellectual environment. I make mine, you make yours, we make reality through choice. Dialectical materialism is the unsurpassable philosophy of those who choose, who commit themselves to, the value of freedom. Finally, the self-understanding, or project, thanks to which the world is there for me in a meaningful way, already belongs to that world, derives from it, from the tradition or society in which I find myself. Reason is absurd in that it believes that it can explain the totality of the human experience whereas it is exactly its inability for explanation that, for example, a moment of fall designates.
